End Zone Red and Goal Line White will hit Manitoba store shelves just after Labour Day
NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, Ont. (September 2, 2015) — Shortly after the Winnipeg Blue Bombers square off with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina on Labour Day weekend, the official wine of the 103rd Grey Cup will be on liquor store shelves across Manitoba.
Supplied by Niagara’s award-winning PondView Estates Winery, which is also the winery behind the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Premium Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, the limited edition End Zone Red and Goal Line White VQA wines will be poured at all official Grey Cup events in the weeks and months leading up to the annual Canadian Football League championship game, being held at Investors Group Field on November 29th.
“BKG Distributors is proud to be a partner with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and PondView Estates is the right winery for this Grey Cup project,” says Bennie Gusnowsky, owner of BKG Distributors. “We worked very hard to with both the Club and the winery to ensure the wines were not only great quality but also great value; wines that our province could be truly proud of during our hosting of this year’s Grey Cup.”
Both the End Zone Red and Goal Line White bear the VQA medallion that assures wine lovers the wine in the bottle is made with 100% Canadian grapes; in this case, all the grapes that went into these wines were grown on PondView’s Estate vineyard in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, one of Canada’s premier grape-growing regions.
This is a great marriage of Canadian football and Canadian wine,” says Marcel Morgenstern, a Sommelier and director of sales at PondView. “The chosen wines have been carefully crafted by our winemaker Fred DiProfio and are a great pairing with Grey Cup football. They are soft and easy drinking, and are a superb match for the kinds of foods you may find at a tailgate party.”
End Zone Red, a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, has aromas of black cherry, red plum, sweet spice and a hint of black licorice. Soft tannins give way to earthy notes, blackberries, chocolate and crunchy red apples on the palate. This easy-drinking red is amazing with grilled burgers or pizza.
Goal Line White is a beautiful off-dry blend of Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Riesling. A crisp and fresh wine, it boasts aromas of green apple, tropical fruit, mango and tangerine. It’s a fun and easy-drinking wine that goes just as well on its own as it does with chicken wings and light cheeses.
Both the red and white wines will be hitting Liquormart and private wine store shelves across Manitoba by the middle of September, but will only be available for a limited time. Once the final whistle sounds and the Grey Cup is awarded to the best team in the CFL, they will be gone.
“The Grey Cup is a national celebration of Canadian football, so it is only natural that we pair with a truly Canadian wine,” says Jason Smith, President of the Grey Cup Festival. “We are extremely proud to present these PondView wines at all of our Grey Cup Festival celebrations in the City of Winnipeg.”
